Nintendo has categorized the games playable on the Switch 2 into three types: Native Switch 2 games, which are exclusive to the new system; Compatible Switch 1 games, which can be played directly on the Switch 2 using their original cartridges; and Switch 2 Edition games, which are enhanced versions of Switch 1 titles. This categorization does not include the classic games accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online service, which spans titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now the GameCube.
Nintendo is keen on enhancing the gaming experience with Switch 2 Edition games. For instance, the Switch 2 Edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree includes a new feature called Jamboree TV, which utilizes the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, Switch 2 microphone, and a separately sold USB-C camera. Additionally, this edition boasts an upgraded resolution up to 1440p in TV mode, a better frame rate, new minigames, and enhanced online functionalities.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-gen title, will introduce mouse control support via Joy-Con 2, and offer multiple display modes such as Quality Mode, which supports 60fps at 4K when docked or 1080p at 60fps in handheld, and Performance Mode, which runs at 120fps at 1080p when docked or 720p in handheld. All modes will support HDR for a richer visual experience.
Other Switch 2 Edition games will introduce new story content, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land's Star-Crossed World add-on. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will benefit from the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, providing players with in-depth guides and game help. Conversely, games like Pokemon Legends: Z-A will primarily see improvements in performance and resolution.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, with the first wave of Switch 2 Edition games arriving around the same time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will receive their Switch 2 Editions on launch day. Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will follow on July 24, 2025, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land's update is slated for August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are expected sometime in 2025, though specific dates have yet to be announced.
The cost of Switch 2 Editions varies based on ownership. If you don't own the Switch 1 version, you can purchase the Switch 2 Edition at retail, easily identifiable by its distinctive red-colored physical game case or the prominent Switch 2 logo on digital versions. For those who already own the Switch 1 version and want the Switch 2 Edition upgrades, an upgrade pack will be available. These can be purchased from select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop, though pricing details for these upgrade packs have not yet been disclosed.
Notably, the upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be included with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also provides access to online features and a library of classic games.
