Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Is Looking Pretty Good Right About Now

The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to rumors suggesting Joy-Con functionality as a mouse.
A striking scene in the reveal trailer shows detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to what appear to be flat-bottomed connectors. These then smoothly glide across the surface, mimicking mouse movement on a mousepad. A closer look even reveals a potential slider pad on one connector, further supporting this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those found in computer mice, enabling this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm this feature or its implications. While some fans envision enhanced gameplay for traditionally mouse-and-keyboard titles like Civilization, others anticipate innovative uses within Nintendo's first-party software. The possibilities remain excitingly open.
Despite the unknowns surrounding potential mouse support (and the purpose of that intriguing new Joy-Con button), we have some concrete details. We know it's officially the Nintendo Switch 2, launching in 2025, and a new Mario Kart is in development. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is confirmed, and a dedicated Direct in April will unveil more software announcements. Stay tuned for comprehensive Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
