If you’re a fan of the Nintendo Switch, you might already know that the buzz around its successor is heating up. The recently unveiled announcement trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 reveals a console that’s undeniably bigger than its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach from the Switch, the tablet section expands into its enhanced form. This significant size upgrade suggests that Nintendo is shifting away from the compact handhelds of the past and aligning with the trend of larger portable gaming devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
But just how much bigger is the Switch 2 compared to the original? While Nintendo hasn’t released official dimensions, we can make a pretty educated guess based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, a mock-up created by peripheral designer Genki gave us a hands-on preview. Although we couldn’t confirm its accuracy at the time, the official trailer shows a console nearly identical to the mock-up. This means the measurements we took at CES are likely spot-on.
So, how big is the Switch 2? Let’s dive into the details.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Our estimates suggest that the Switch 2 boasts an 8-inch screen, measured diagonally from corner to corner. This is the standard measurement for display sizes, excluding bezels. Based on this, we predict the screen to be approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall.
If these numbers hold true, the Switch 2’s screen will be nearly 30% larger than the original Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD display and 66% larger in total area. That’s quite a leap! While bigger doesn’t always equate to better, a quality display could make the Switch 2 a standout device for gamers.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2’s screen outshines the Switch Lite’s 5.5-inch display, which is 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in area. Even compared to the Switch OLED’s 7-inch screen, the Switch 2 offers a 14% diagonal advantage and 30% more area.
In today’s competitive market, the Switch 2 also surpasses the Steam Deck, which has a 7-inch display similar to the Switch OLED. Although the Steam Deck’s aspect ratio is slightly taller at 16:10, the Switch 2’s screen remains 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in area.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The bigger screen naturally means the entire console is larger. If you struggle to fit the original Switch in your pocket, the Switch 2 will require even more space. Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. In contrast, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall, making the Switch 2 about 25% larger.
These dimensions also mean the Switch 2 is 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Depth-wise, the Switch 2 appears to maintain the original Switch’s slim profile, likely around half an inch thick.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The trailer hints that the Joy-Con controllers retain their original width but have grown slightly taller. Based on scaled images and our scientific approach, we estimate the new Switch 2 Joy-Cons to measure 32mm wide and 115mm tall—the same width as the originals but 13mm taller. If correct, this makes the new Joy-Cons 13% larger than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console gives us an approximate size for the screen unit: 200mm long and 115mm tall. This represents a 31% increase over the original Switch’s screen unit.
This unit will comfortably house the 8-inch screen, with bezels measuring approximately 11mm on the sides and 8mm on the top and bottom. The sides are slimmer than the original Switch, while the top and bottom bezels remain similar.
While these are estimates, the Genki mock-up closely mirrors the official trailer, giving us confidence in our predictions. Expect a console that’s roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we get our hands on it later this year.
