The excitement around the gaming community has reached a fever pitch after Masahiro Sakurai, the mastermind behind Super Smash Bros., re-shared the announcement for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Scheduled for April 2, the event promises a full reveal of the next-generation console, and Sakurai's simple "Ooh!" has set tongues wagging about the potential for a new entry in the iconic fighting game series.
While Sakurai's post alone may not confirm anything, it's part of a series of subtle hints that have fans buzzing with anticipation. Since launching his YouTube channel in 2022 and then winding it down, Sakurai hinted at working on a new game that could be unveiled "sooner or later." This, combined with his excitement over the Switch 2 announcement, fuels speculation about a new Super Smash Bros. game.
Despite no official word on a new Super Smash Bros. game, Sakurai has previously expressed doubts about topping the monumental success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. This game broke boundaries by including a diverse roster of characters, from Nintendo's own icons to guest stars like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, and even Steve and Alex from Minecraft.
Yet, the commercial success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with sales topping 35.88 million, suggests a strong case for a sequel on the Nintendo Switch 2. Moreover, Nintendo's history of launching a new Super Smash Bros. game with each new console since the original on the N64 in 1999 adds to the anticipation. As fans eagerly await the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the possibility of a new Super Smash Bros. game looms large, promising to further evolve this beloved franchise.
