Sixteen years have passed since Plants vs Zombies first captivated players. Now, over a decade and a half later, we reflect on this mobile gaming classic and its evolution. From modest origins to navigating major acquisitions and expanding beyond mobile, PvZ remains a towering figure in gaming history.
The journey began with Popcap Games in the late 2000s, launching Plants vs Zombies on desktop in 2009. Its leap to mobile in 2010, coupled with a free-to-play model, propelled PvZ to global fame.
In 2012, EA acquired Popcap, and despite a rocky shift to mobile-first focus and layoffs, the franchise solidified its mobile legacy with Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time in 2013.
Beyond Mobile Platforms
EA envisioned PvZ as a console gaming staple, releasing Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare and Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville to mixed reviews. Their third-person shooter gameplay marked a bold departure from the original tower defense formula.
Plants vs Zombies 3: Welcome to Zomburbia, in development since 2020, recently underwent a major overhaul, pausing its soft launch. It aims to revive the series with a fresh art style and classic tower defense mechanics.
