Since the November 2024 launch of the PS5 Pro, a significant shortage of the standalone PlayStation 5 disc drive persists, frustrating gamers. The PS5 Pro's omission of a built-in disc drive necessitates the purchase of this accessory, creating high demand.
Sony's official PS Direct stores in both the US and UK remain consistently out of stock, with available units rapidly disappearing. This situation mirrors the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers acquiring drives and reselling them at exorbitant prices. This adds considerable cost to the already expensive PS5 Pro console.
While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive limited stock, the supply is far outweighed by demand. The lack of a statement from Sony regarding this ongoing shortage is notable, especially considering their past efforts to address production challenges.
The PS5 Pro's design choice, eliminating the built-in disc drive, has drawn criticism, particularly given the added $80 expense of the separate drive from official sources. Coupled with scalping activities, many PlayStation fans face a prolonged wait for improved availability and more reasonable prices. The current outlook suggests this shortage will continue for the foreseeable future.
