Pokémon Fans Are Frantically Trying to Work Out How Pokémon Legends: Z-A Connects to Other Pokémon Games

This morning, we got our first extensive look at Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Game Freak's futuristic Pokémon game set in the familiar Lumiose City from Pokémon X/Y. While the trailer showcased rooftop running, battle changes, and Mega Evolution, many questions remain about its placement within the Pokémon timeline and the potential return of familiar characters.

The Pokémon Legends series has a history of time travel and connections to past games. Legends: Arceus featured locations and characters from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, set hundreds of years in the past. This raises anticipation for Legends: Z-A, particularly regarding its timeline, potential time travel elements, and returning characters in Lumiose City.

Since the trailer's release, fans have been uncovering intriguing connections. The most prominent is AZ, directly mentioned in the trailer. Given his immortality (granted 3000 years before Pokémon X and Y), his presence, seemingly running a hotel in Lumiose City, is plausible regardless of the game's setting. He appears happier, reunited with his Floette.

Subtle connections abound. Fans have noted a building resembling the Looker Bureau from previous games, suggesting the presence of Looker or his protégé, Emma.

A particularly exciting theory links the protagonists to Ethan and Lyra from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, sparking speculation about a time-traveling scenario where they're transported to a futuristic Lumiose.

Another theory proposes a different origin story, suggesting a resemblance between the protagonists and Professor Sycamore and Grace (the protagonist's mother in Pokémon X and Y). This is more speculative but intriguing, given the Legends series' focus on ancestry.

Intriguingly, these theories aren't mutually exclusive. The game's exact placement in the timeline remains unknown. Considering the Pokémon universe's loose sequential timeline, alternate realities, and past instances of time travel (as seen in Legends: Arceus), multiple theories could be simultaneously true. AZ's presence suggests a post-Pokémon X and Y setting, potentially hundreds of years later, given his immortality. Lumiose City's futuristic size hints at decades of development. If so, the protagonists and Looker Bureau personnel could be descendants of the characters they resemble.

Another point of fascination is a mysterious woman in the key art, resembling a Hex Maniac from Pokémon X and Y. This is particularly interesting due to the unsolved mystery of the "Ghost Girl" in Pokémon X and Y—a Hex Maniac who appears briefly in Lumiose City, uttering cryptic words before vanishing. The woman's presence raises hopes of finally unraveling this long-standing mystery.

In the coming days, further discoveries and connections will undoubtedly emerge from the newly revealed footage, art, and news. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is slated for a late 2025 release, leaving plenty of time to dissect these intriguing theories and eagerly await the game's launch. Stay tuned for more updates!
