According to The Wrap, the masterminds behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to write, showrun, and produce this new venture for Disney+ and 20th Century TV. This move signals a fresh start for the beloved series, aiming to captivate a new generation while keeping the existing fanbase engaged.
The ‘90s TV phenomenon, The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, became essential viewing for a generation of kids. These young viewers idolized the teenage superheroes and their awe-inspiring mechs, which could combine to form an even more formidable mega-mech.
In a significant move back in 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise, along with other brands, from Saban Properties in a deal valued at $522 million. At the time of the acquisition, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, expressed enthusiasm about the "tremendous upside potential" of the Power Rangers brand. He highlighted the possibilities for expansion across toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, entertainment, and global retail.
This acquisition followed the unsuccessful 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a gritty makeover of Power Rangers and was intended to launch a series of sequels. However, due to underwhelming box office results, those plans were abandoned, leading Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro shortly thereafter.
Hasbro's ambitions don't stop with Power Rangers. The company is also developing other high-profile projects, such as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms at Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also at Netflix, and a cinematic universe for Magic: The Gathering. These endeavors showcase Hasbro's commitment to expanding its iconic franchises across various media platforms.
