Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in layoffs of an unspecified number of staff members involved in the project. This information initially surfaced through a now-deleted LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who mentioned joining the job market after the project's cancellation.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project. It was being developed by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs is unknown, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one team member has stated on LinkedIn that their exit from the project was voluntary.
This cancellation is part of a broader trend of project terminations and layoffs within Electronic Arts (EA). In 2023, EA began cutting jobs, starting with 50 positions at BioWare and an undisclosed number at Codemasters. Approximately a year ago, EA further reduced its workforce by 670 employees and canceled several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, which led to around two dozen layoffs at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional key staff being let go.
IGN has sought a response from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
