Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

Mar 18,2025 Author: Daniel

Sony has announced an update regarding the limited-time classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, covering PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These beloved themes, which add nostalgic imagery and sounds from past consoles to the PS5 interface, are departing tomorrow, January 31st, 2025. However, Sony assures fans that these popular themes will return at a later date. The company stated, “Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow. Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

Despite this positive news, Sony also confirmed that there are currently no plans to release additional console themes beyond these four. In a subsequent tweet, they stated, “While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.” This announcement has met with some disappointment from fans, who have expressed their desire for more thematic options on the PS5.

The temporary themes, released in celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3rd, 2024, offered a visually and aurally immersive trip down memory lane. The PS1 theme featured the classic console on the home screen background, the PS2 theme incorporated its distinctive menu shapes, the PS3 theme utilized its wave background, and the PS4 theme similarly included its characteristic wave patterns. Each theme also included the corresponding console's boot-up and menu sound effects. The absence of further themes, at least for this generation, is a notable omission considering the feature's presence in previous PlayStation consoles.
