Nintendo has provided clarity on the compatibility of its newly unveiled GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it for games beyond the retro library. The controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, with initial fine print indicating its compatibility was limited to "Nintendo GameCube" games available through the Nintendo Switch Online service.
In a recent statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is primarily designed for the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection. While it may be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players should be aware that "some issues" could arise due to the absence of certain buttons and features found on more modern controllers.
Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," the company stated.
