Sydney Sweeney is set to lead in the upcoming film adaptation of Split Fiction.
Last month, reports emerged of a movie based on Hazelight’s game, with Story Kitchen, known for the Sonic films, assembling a team of writers, a director, and actors.
According to Variety, Split Fiction is gaining momentum, with Madame Web’s Sydney Sweeney confirmed to star. Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, will helm the project, with the screenplay penned by Deadpool & Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Story Kitchen is now pitching this creative package to Hollywood studios, sparking anticipation for a competitive bidding process.
The key question remains: Will Sweeney portray Zoe or Mio? Variety notes the decision is still pending.
Launched in March, Split Fiction has already become a standout success for Hazelight and designer Josef Fares, selling over 2 million copies in its first week. It’s also slated as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2.
IGN’s review of Split Fiction gave it a 9/10, praising it as “a masterfully designed co-op adventure that shifts seamlessly across genres, delivering a thrilling mix of innovative gameplay and styles that’s hard to put down.”
Hazelight has more in the pipeline, with its 23 million-selling game It Takes Two also being adapted into a film, potentially starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
While there’s no guarantee these Hazelight adaptations will come to fruition, the current wave of successful video game films suggests Hollywood is eager to bring them to life.
Last year, Story Kitchen revealed a film adaptation of Square Enix’s Just Cause, directed by Blue Beetle’s Ángel Manuel Soto. The studio is also working on Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, Sleeping Dogs, and a live-action Toys ‘R’ Us film.
Meanwhile, Hazelight is already teasing its next game, building anticipation for what’s to come.
