LocalThunk, the solo developer behind the hugely successful indie game Balatro (3.5 million copies sold!), has declared Animal Well his 2024 Game of the Year. This accolade, humorously dubbed the "Golden Thunk" award, highlights the immersive experience, style, and secrets within Animal Well, calling it developer Billy Basso's "true masterpiece." Basso, in response, lauded LocalThunk as a remarkably humble and kind developer. This exchange showcases positive camaraderie within the indie game development community.
The success of Balatro, a critically acclaimed pixel art deck-building game, is undeniable. However, 2024 saw the rise of several other noteworthy indie titles, including Neva, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and UFO 50, with Animal Well standing out as a critical darling alongside Balatro.
Beyond Animal Well, LocalThunk's "runners-up" for his favorite games of 2024 include Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, Arco, Nova Drift, Ballionaire, and Mouthwashing. He detailed his appreciation for each, noting the shared deck-building and pixel art style between Balatro and Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers.
LocalThunk's commitment to Balatro extends beyond its initial release. He's consistently delivered free updates, including three "Friends of Jimbo" crossovers featuring Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, and Dave the Diver, and has hinted at future collaborations with other popular 2024 titles.
