NieR: Automata allows players extensive freedom to explore the world and complete side quests between main story missions. Many opportunities for content completion might be missed during the initial playthrough. Even after seeing the credits for the first time, the game is far from complete. Access to earlier side quests within the same save file is only granted after truly finishing the game. This guide explains how to unlock and utilize Chapter Select.

Unlocking Chapter Select requires completing one of the game's true endings. This involves finishing all three playthroughs and selecting a specific ending during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While often referred to as playthroughs, some consider each as a distinct chapter within the overarching narrative.
After viewing the credits at the end of a playthrough, save the game. Reload that save to begin the next segment, playing as a different character. The final playthrough involves switching between multiple characters. Completing it unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.
Access Chapter Select from two locations:
This menu allows selection of any chapter within the main storyline. All aspects of your profile, including weapons, level, and items, are retained. When loading a chapter, you can choose the character, provided that chapter features multiple playable characters.
It's important to note that completed side quests cannot be replayed regardless of the selected chapter. When transitioning between chapters, utilize the save function at an access point. Otherwise, progress within that chapter (levels gained, items acquired) will be lost. Chapter Select is invaluable for completing all content and revisiting choices to unlock every ending.
