While Magic: The Gathering’s recent crossovers with franchises like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have taken center stage, the next expansion is quietly making waves. Titled Tarkir: Dragonstorm, this set marks a return to Magic’s iconic plane of Tarkir, and we’ve secured an exclusive first look at five cards destined to dominate draft tables when the expansion drops next month. These five cards form a “cycle,” each representing a distinct color within Magic’s spectrum while sharing common mechanics tied to Tarkir’s three-color clans. At their core, these are budget-friendly, common-rarity creatures equipped with abilities linked to their respective clans, along with tools to generate mana aligned with those clans.
“Three-color limited environments require robust mana-fixing solutions across all rarity levels,” explains Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “We aimed to ensure that numerous decks could access this essential utility. By designing these creatures to simultaneously contribute to gameplay and mana development, we avoided pitfalls of other solutions, such as tapped lands, which can hinder progress.”

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond notes that these common cards serve dual purposes: showcasing the world of Tarkir and highlighting how its clans have evolved since players last visited. “From the action-oriented monks of the Jeskai to the magical whispers of the Temur, the serpent guardians of the Sultai, the militaristic Mardu with their diverse dragon forms, and the Abzan clerics nurturing the lost kin trees, each clan reflects its essence.”
Some critics have pointed out recent sets leaning heavily on familiar tropes when revisiting past planes. However, *Tarkir: Dragonstorm* stands apart with its authentic and straightforward return. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges this feedback is valuable but emphasizes that the set’s concept was locked in long before recent releases. “Our goal was to blend Dragons and Clans uniquely, honoring the defining Dragonstorms of Tarkir. Lauren and I felt this responsibility from day one—to craft the next chapter authentically.”
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with an in-store release date set for April 11. Prerelease events begin April 4. For more insights from Wizards of the Coast, read the full interview with Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl.
