In television, no beloved show truly stays gone forever — this year has already brought revivals from universes as varied as The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and now the acclaimed 2000s medical comedy Scrubs joins the comeback trend.
Twenty-four years after Zach Braff first portrayed intern doctor JD at Sacred Heart Hospital, the actor has confirmed his return for ABC's upcoming Scrubs revival. The project will reportedly blend established characters with fresh faces.
A Second Chance at Success
This isn't ABC's first attempt at continuing the Scrubs legacy. The network previously attempted a transition in Season 9, where Braff and original cast members gradually passed the torch to a younger ensemble. The poorly received effort lasted just nine episodes before cancellation.

Now, after nearly twenty years, original creator Bill Lawrence is leading this new hybrid revival/reboot attempt. With Braff officially onboard, industry reports suggest other veteran cast members may soon follow.
"We've considered numerous approaches, but the only compelling reason to revisit Scrubs involves two key elements," Lawrence explained to Deadline. "First, audiences genuinely want to check in on these beloved characters' medical journeys — that nostalgic connection fuels all successful revivals. Second, the show's magic always came from watching idealistic young professionals navigate the medical world."
The original Scrubs series delivered 182 episodes between 2001-2010. Production timelines for the new episodes remain unconfirmed at this stage.
