HBO has celebrated the triumph of The Last of Us Season 2, noting a surge in viewership that has boosted the show's global audience to over 90 million since the conclusion of Season 1.
In the United States, the Season 2 finale attracted 3.7 million viewers across various platforms. The premiere episode of Season 2 drew an impressive 5.3 million viewers, indicating a drop in viewership from the season's start to its end. However, Warner Bros. remains optimistic, anticipating a significant increase in viewership for the Season 2 finale due to the impact of the Memorial Day holiday weekend on initial viewership numbers.
It's important to mention that the Season 1 finale set a viewership record with 8.2 million viewers, a benchmark that the Season 2 finale has yet to surpass.
On a brighter note, Season 2 has achieved a higher average viewership per episode compared to Season 1. Currently, Season 2 boasts nearly 37 million worldwide viewers per episode, a number that Warner Bros. says is on the rise. For comparison, Season 1 ended with 32 million U.S. cross-platform viewers 90 days after its premiere.

Speaking to Collider, Mazin explained that concluding the narrative in Season 3 would extend its duration excessively. He suggested that while Season 3 might be longer than Season 2, it would be impossible to wrap up the entire story in just three seasons.
