2XKO: Innovating Tag-Team Wrestling with Unique Approach

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article delves into its innovative tag-team mechanics and playable demo.

Showcased at EVO 2024 (July 19-21), 2XKO introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the 2v2 formula. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches, with teams of two. Each team features a "Point" character (the main attacker) and an "Assist" character. Even 2v1 matchups are possible.

The innovative tag system includes:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can call upon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist characters instantly swap roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.

Matches are longer than in traditional tag fighters; both players on a team must be defeated to win a round. Defeated champions remain active as Assists.

Beyond character selection, "Fuses" offer strategic team customization. The demo showcased five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks for devastating combos.
  • FURY: Bonus damage and special dash cancel below 40% health.
  • FREESTYLE: Perform two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Empower your partner with multiple assist actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse system's role in amplifying player expression and enabling powerful synced combos.

The demo featured six League of Legends champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique moves mirroring their in-game abilities. While Jinx and Katarina were previously showcased, they're absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest but confirmed for future inclusion.

2XKO Alpha Lab Playtest

2XKO, a free-to-play title comparable to MultiVersus, launches on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. Registration is open for the Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19). Further details are available in the linked article. (Note: The linked article is not provided here).
