"6 Final Fantasy Cards Unveiled for Magic: The Gathering"

May 25,2025 Author: Mia

As pre-orders continue to fly off the shelves and countless references are unveiled, Magic: The Gathering's upcoming crossover with Final Fantasy is poised to be its most ambitious collaboration to date. Today, we're thrilled to reveal six new cards that will be part of the upcoming set. These cards feature stunning artwork by Yoshitaka Amano, known for his classic Final Fantasy concept art, and the more contemporary style of Toshitaka Matsuda.

The cards we're showcasing today belong to the "Through the Ages" bonus sheet, which is included within the larger main set. These are reprints of existing Magic: The Gathering cards, but they come adorned with unique concept art and characters from various Final Fantasy games. While they don't introduce new mechanics or brand-new cards like those seen in recent reveals or the previously showcased Commander decks, they offer an artistic journey through the history of Final Fantasy, reaching back to the very first game in the series.

Unlike the cards in the main set, the "Through the Ages" cards are not legal in Magic's Standard format (although they retain their legality if the original card was already legal there). Essentially, they serve as alternate art versions of existing cards. However, you can find them in both the premium Collector Boosters and in one out of every three regular Play Boosters, which are used for Limited events like Draft and Sealed.

If you're planning to dive deep into this set, whether at your local game store or digitally on platforms like Magic: The Gathering Arena, expect to encounter these cards frequently. Five of the six cards are Rares, meaning they might be less common, but Thrum of the Vestige, an Uncommon, is a reskin of the highly popular Lightning Bolt. This particular card is likely to make a significant impact within the set.

The Warrior of Light reprinting of Jodah, the Unifier, is bound to be a fan favorite. Jodah is a powerful and widely used Commander, and the artwork here is none other than Amano's from the original Japanese boxart of Final Fantasy. Similarly, Amano's iconic art for Final Fantasy IV's Cecil Harvey has been reimagined for Tymna the Weaver, one of Magic's strongest partner commanders, which has only seen one reprint prior to this.

These cards will be available physically as part of the larger Final Fantasy set on June 13, with digital versions launching on MTG Arena and MTGO on June 10. Even if you're a Final Fantasy fan not yet into Magic, there's plenty to be excited about. Tetsuya Nomura, the director of the FF7 Remake series, hinted that the design of Sephiroth on one card has a unique twist for a mysterious reason.
