Unlike the rain-soaked Los Angeles of previous installments, Tokyo Nexus presents a unique, "hopepunk" vision of 2015. Shore, drawing on personal experience and future-focused exhibitions, crafted a Tokyo distinct from its Los Angeles counterpart. Brown contrasts this with the seemingly utopian façade masking a potentially brutal underbelly, mirroring the dystopian elements of the original Blade Runner.

Consciously avoiding direct homage to Akira and Ghost in the Shell, the writers drew inspiration from post-3.11 Tohoku Disaster Japanese media (Your Name, Japan Sinks 2020, Bubble) and contemporary Japanese society to create an authentic and original setting. Their focus was on reflecting current anxieties and aspirations within the context of a Blade Runner narrative.

Set in 2015, Tokyo Nexus stands as a standalone story within the broader franchise. While subtle nods and easter eggs connect it to the larger Blade Runner universe, it's accessible to newcomers. The series expands on previously unexplored aspects of the franchise, including the Kalanthia War and Tyrell Corporation's replicant monopoly, hinting at a larger conflict between rival Blade Runner organizations.

Central to the narrative is the unlikely partnership between Mead, a battle-hardened human, and Stix, a replicant. Their bond, described as a "platonic life-partnership," forms the emotional core of the series, exploring themes of codependency and survival in a harsh environment.

The story unfolds amidst a conflict involving Tyrell Corp, the Yakuza, and Cheshire, a new player challenging Tyrell's replicant market dominance. Cheshire's introduction of a new military-grade replicant adds another layer of intrigue to the already complex narrative.
