Recently uncovered screenshots reveal Sony's canceled Twisted Metal project, suggesting developer Firesprite was crafting a live-service title that merged the series' iconic car combat with battle royale elements.
A former Firesprite UI designer shared blurred concept images labeled "Under NDA" in their online portfolio, listing them under Project Copper - widely believed to be the codename for this unreleased Twisted Metal reboot.
Though dormant since PlayStation 3, this classic vehicular combat franchise was being revived as Firesprite's "third-person vehicular action game based on a classic PlayStation IP," blending shooter mechanics with last-man-standing vehicle battles.
Sony axed the project during February 2024 layoffs, when it reportedly hadn't received full production approval despite being in active development at UK-based Firesprite.

The cancellation reflects Sony's strategic retreat from live-service games after initially prioritizing them, following similar terminations including Naughty Dog's Last of Us multiplayer project.
While Helldivers 2 became PlayStation's fastest-selling title with 12 million copies sold, Sony's hero shooter Concord flopped spectacularly - shutting down weeks after launch due to abysmal player counts.
January saw Sony scrap two more unannounced live-service titles: a God of War spinoff from Bluepoint and another project by Days Gone's Bend Studio.
Though vehicular mayhem won't return to consoles soon, Anthony Mackie's Twisted Metal TV adaptation gears up for Season 2 after its well-received debut (8/10 from IGN) praised its "dynamic mix of humor, action, and unexpected depth."
