Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains firm. Evans emphasized his contentment with his retirement, stating this type of rumor surfaces periodically since Avengers: Endgame.
While Evans has returned to the superhero genre in a smaller, comedic role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his return to the main MCU storyline as Captain America is not happening.
The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors was set to play a significant antagonist, Kang, but his departure has led to a shift in plans.
Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., has been announced as the new primary villain, sparking speculation about the return of other original Avengers. However, no other returns have been officially confirmed. Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange will not be in Avengers: Doomsday, but will feature centrally in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
