As a fan of thatgamecompany’s Sky: Children of the Light, I'm thrilled about their upcoming project, an in-game animated feature titled "The Two Embers." This is an ambitious endeavor for thatgamecompany, premiering a limited in-game screening of "The Two Embers: Part One" starting on July 21st. This silent animated feature will delve into the origin story of Sky, captivating audiences with its unique art style and emotional storytelling, elements that have always been a hallmark of the game.
Exploring the Story of The Two Embers
"The Two Embers" is divided into two parts, with Part One focusing on the journeys of two children separated by time but connected deeply. The story begins with a young orphan living on the outskirts of The Ruler’s City, a once-thriving place now slowly crumbling. The narrative takes a poignant turn when the child discovers a wounded baby manatee, weaving themes of grief, loneliness, and the power of small acts of kindness. Meanwhile, The Ruler observes the decaying kingdom from above as a looming dark storm encroaches.
Without dialogue or voiceovers, the feature relies solely on visuals, music, and emotion to convey the child's grief and the manatee's glimmer of hope, showcasing the storytelling prowess of thatgamecompany. Sky: Children of the Light has released a first look at "The Two Embers: Part One," which you can view below:
Each week, a new chapter of the film will be unlocked inside Sky Cinema, an in-game theater built specifically for this experience. Alongside the film, new in-game content related to each chapter will be released, allowing players to explore the story more deeply through interactive gameplay.
A Groundbreaking Release Strategy
Rather than releasing "The Two Embers" as a standalone film or on a streaming platform, thatgamecompany has chosen to integrate it directly into the Sky experience. This innovative approach not only enhances the game's immersive quality but also elevates it into a realm beyond traditional gaming. Alongside this, the company is preparing for Aurora’s concert, making "The Two Embers" a significant step in their transmedia storytelling efforts.
The film is a collaborative production between Light & Realm and thatgamecompany, co-produced by Illusorium Studios and Orchid. This project marks one of the most ambitious undertakings by thatgamecompany to date. If you haven't yet experienced Sky, you can check it out on the Google Play Store.
