Blumhouse, the top horror studio, is gearing up to celebrate its 15th anniversary with a bang by bringing back the 2022 hit film, M3GAN, to theaters. This move comes ahead of the eagerly anticipated sequel, M3GAN 2.0. What makes this re-release unique, and somewhat controversial, is the integration of new interactive features that encourage the use of smartphones in theaters.
As part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, for one-night-only engagements. These screenings will feature Meta's "Movie Mate" technology, which introduces an interactive element allowing audience members to engage with M3GAN via a chatbot. Additionally, the technology offers second screen capabilities that will display exclusive content in real-time, enhancing the movie-watching experience.
"Movie Mate is exclusively available to moviegoers within the theater and is activated by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN," Blumhouse detailed in a report by Variety. This innovative approach is designed to leverage Meta's capabilities to enrich the 'second screen' viewing experience, building excitement for the upcoming release of M3GAN 2.0 on June 27.
The studio also teased fans with promises of sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise special appearances in select markets. While this move aims to revitalize the theatrical experience, it has sparked debate about the impact of smartphone usage in cinemas. It remains to be seen how fans will respond to this novel approach, but the hope is that it won't become a standard for regular screenings anytime soon.
The special M3GAN screening is scheduled for April 30 in various theaters across the nation, followed by Annabelle on May 7, and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 is set to premiere in the United States on June 27.
