This vibrant showcase pits the speedy Sonic against the iconic Mario, blending the fast-paced action of Sonic's world with the colorful landscapes of the Mushroom Kingdom.
The inspiration? The phenomenal box office success of the Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog films, which collectively raked in over $2 billion globally.
While a true crossover featuring both Nintendo and Sega's mascots remains improbable given their historical competition, the concept clearly resonates deeply with audiences.
In the meantime, fans can eagerly anticipate the upcoming sequels: Super Mario Bros. at the Movies 2 (2026) and Sonic 4 at the Movies (2027).
Separately, December saw the unveiling of a partnership between McDonald's, Sega, and Paramount. This collaboration initially brought Sonic toys to the US market in 2022, fueling speculation about a tie-in with the third Sonic film. After much anticipation, McDonald's launched a new Sonic promotion in Colombia, featuring twelve unique hedgehog toys. Despite initial regional exclusivity, McDonald's later confirmed a US release, offering a special Sonic the Hedgehog 3 toy with each Happy Meal, alongside a side, a drink, and a choice of McNuggets or a hamburger.
