If you’re among the countless fans playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on PC, you’ve likely encountered some frustrating performance issues.
Tech analysts at Digital Foundry have highlighted severe performance challenges in Oblivion Remastered on PC. Video producer Alex Battaglia described it as “one of the most poorly optimized games I’ve tested for Digital Foundry.”
“Even with top-tier hardware, the stuttering is unbearable, severely impacting gameplay to the point where it’s hard to believe this was deemed release-ready,” Battaglia noted.
“Beyond the stuttering, this game is inexplicably resource-heavy, forcing players to lower settings just to maintain a decent average frame rate, even if they can tolerate the inconsistent performance,” he added.
It’s no shock, then, that the most popular mod for Oblivion Remastered on Nexus Mods is P40L0’s ‘Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters - Lower Latency - No Film Grain - No Chromatic Aberration - Lossless),’ downloaded over 386,604 times in under a week.
Here’s the mod’s description:
“Targeted Unreal ‘Engine.ini’ adjustments designed to eliminate stuttering, boost performance and stability, reduce input lag, and enhance visual clarity—all without compromising visuals.”
“After extensive UE5 testing, I’m sharing my optimized ‘Engine.ini’ tweaks for the game,” P40L0 stated.
“My aim was to incorporate as many optimizations as possible (for CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD) to minimize stuttering, improve performance, lower input lag, and sharpen visuals by removing elements like Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, and more—without sacrificing visual quality or introducing bugs.”
Feedback from mod users is overwhelmingly positive. “No more stuttering! Absolutely incredible, thank you!” said chubbyd07. “This .ini is a game-changer. Went from 15-20 fps outside the prison to a steady 65-70 on a 3600XT and 2060 with 20GB RAM,” yeeto51 shared. “Unbelievable! From 60fps on High Preset near Waynon Priory to 90-110fps in the same spot. Pure magic!” BabaSmith exclaimed.
Despite its PC performance issues, Oblivion Remastered remains a hit, boasting a strong Steam concurrent player peak and over 4 million players across platforms. On Steam, it holds a ‘very positive’ user review rating.
However, a hotfix released on April 25 has disrupted UI settings for graphics, particularly upscaling and anti-aliasing, for Microsoft Store players. As of this article’s publication, those playing via Game Pass for PC cannot adjust these settings due to a UI glitch. Bethesda has confirmed it’s working on a fix.
