The game features a repeatedly traversed dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades, a common element within the popular roguelike genre. Rogue Loops's key differentiating factor lies in its ability upgrade system. Each upgrade comes with a distinct downside, significantly impacting gameplay. This mechanic echoes the Chaos Gates in Hades, but in Rogue Loops, these negative effects, or "curses," play a more prominent and varied role, potentially lasting the entire playthrough.

Classic roguelike elements are present, with procedurally generated upgrades enabling players to craft diverse builds using both beneficial and detrimental boons.
