Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, draws significant inspiration from Hades, particularly in its art style and core gameplay loop. However, it introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart from the pack. While a precise release date remains unannounced, a PC launch is anticipated in early 2025. A free demo is currently available on Steam, offering players a sneak peek.
The game features a repeatedly traversed dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades, a common element within the popular roguelike genre. This genre has seen a surge in popularity, encompassing diverse titles ranging from third-person shooters like Returnal to traditional dungeon crawlers such as Hades and its early-access sequel.
Rogue Loops's key differentiating factor lies in its ability upgrade system. Each upgrade comes with a distinct downside, significantly impacting gameplay. This mechanic echoes the Chaos Gates in Hades, but in Rogue Loops, these negative effects, or "curses," play a more prominent and varied role, potentially lasting the entire playthrough.
The narrative centers on a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five distinct dungeon floors, battling unique enemies and bosses. Classic roguelike elements are present, with procedurally generated upgrades enabling players to craft diverse builds using both beneficial and detrimental boons.
Although an official release date is yet to be confirmed, the Steam page indicates a Q1 2025 launch. Until then, players can explore the first floor via the free demo. Numerous other roguelikes, including Dead Cells and Hades 2, offer engaging alternatives in the interim.
