Teen Spends $25K on Monopoly GO Game

Summary

  • A teenager reportedly spent $25,000 on Monopoly GO in-app purchases, highlighting the financial risks associated with microtransactions.
  • In-app purchases have been a contentious issue within the gaming industry, which heavily relies on them for revenue.
  • Refunds for accidental in-app purchases can be challenging to obtain, emphasizing the potential pitfalls of spending in games like Monopoly GO.

A 17-year-old reportedly spent a staggering $25,000 on Monopoly GO in-app purchases. Despite the game being free-to-play, many players find themselves investing significant sums to expedite their progress and unlock rewards. These microtransactions can accumulate rapidly, as demonstrated by the unfortunate experience of one family.

This teenager is not the first to overspend on the app. Another user disclosed spending $1,000 on Monopoly GO before ultimately uninstalling it. While this amount is considerable for a free game, it pales in comparison to the $25,000 spent by the 17-year-old.

In a now-deleted Reddit post, a stepparent revealed that their 17-year-old step-daughter made 368 purchases totaling $25,000 through the App Store. Seeking advice on how to address this situation, the stepparent turned to Reddit. However, the feedback from other users was discouraging, as Monopoly GO's terms of service typically hold users accountable for all purchases, even if they were made unintentionally. This is a common practice in freemium games, similar to how Pokemon TCG Pocket generated $208 million in its first month of revenue.

In-Game Microtransactions Are an Ongoing Controversy

The case of a teenager spending tens of thousands on Monopoly GO is just one example of the broader controversy surrounding in-game purchases. In 2023, an NBA 2K player initiated a class-action lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive over its microtransaction practices, following a similar lawsuit settled by the company the previous year. Although the Monopoly GO incident may not lead to legal action, it adds to the growing list of grievances regarding in-app spending.

The gaming industry's reliance on microtransactions is understandable given their profitability. For instance, Diablo 4 players collectively spent over $150 million on them. These small, incremental purchases can be more appealing than a single large payment, but this model often feels deceptive to gamers, leading to unintended excessive spending.

Unfortunately, the Reddit user may face difficulties in obtaining a refund. For others, this incident serves as a cautionary tale about the ease of accumulating substantial expenses in games like Monopoly GO.
