"Balatro Dev Localthunk Addresses AI Art Controversy on Reddit"

Apr 07,2025 Author: Hannah

Localthunk, the creative force behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently intervened in a controversy brewing within the game's subreddit community. The issue arose from statements made by DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of a related NSFW subreddit, regarding the use of AI-generated art.

DrTankHead had publicly stated that AI art would not be banned from the subreddits, provided it was properly labeled and tagged. This stance was purportedly supported by discussions with Playstack, the game's publisher. However, Localthunk quickly clarified their position on Bluesky, emphasizing that neither they nor Playstack condoned the use of AI-generated imagery.

In a detailed statement on the subreddit, Localthunk expressed strong opposition to AI "art," citing its potential harm to artists and confirming that it was not used in Balatro. They also announced the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team and a new policy banning AI-generated images from the subreddit, with plans to update the rules and FAQ accordingly.

Playstack's communications director later acknowledged that the existing rules could have been misinterpreted and promised clearer guidelines in the future. Meanwhile, DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator, mentioned in the NSFW Balatro subreddit that they were not aiming to make it AI-centric but were considering a designated day for posting AI-generated non-NSFW art.

The debate over AI-generated content in gaming and entertainment is intensifying, especially against the backdrop of recent industry layoffs. Critics argue that AI raises ethical and rights issues and often fails to produce content that resonates with audiences. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to develop a game entirely with AI was unsuccessful, as they reported to investors that AI could not replace human talent.

Despite these challenges, major tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI. EA has declared AI to be central to its business model, while Capcom is exploring its use to generate vast numbers of ideas for game environments. Activision's recent use of generative AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, including a controversial "AI slop" zombie Santa loading screen, has sparked further debate within the community.
