Rebel Wolves studio has unveiled details about their upcoming vampire RPG, emphasizing the central role of the protagonist's duality. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz describes the character as a modern-day Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a concept largely unexplored in video games. This duality, he believes, will offer a unique layer of surrealism, setting their game apart.
A key challenge, Tomaszkiewicz notes, lies in balancing the protagonist's human and vampiric states. Players will experience periods where the character is a completely ordinary human, lacking superpowers. This deliberate contrast is a calculated risk, as the familiarity of standard RPG mechanics might lead to player confusion if deviated from too drastically.
The studio faces the common RPG development dilemma: innovating versus adhering to established conventions. Tomaszkiewicz cites Kingdom Come: Deliverance's controversial schnapps-dependent save system as a cautionary tale, highlighting the importance of balancing innovation with player expectations and genre conventions. Even seemingly minor changes can spark significant debate among established RPG fans.
The gameplay premiere is slated for Summer 2025.
