Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles introduces significant script revisions to accommodate modern voice acting standards while maintaining the original story's integrity. During a June 21 interview, veteran scriptwriter Yasumi Matsuno clarified that while the narrative remains unchanged, nearly every line has been refined.
Matsuno explained their approach aims to "faithfully recreate the magic of the original 1997 PlayStation game while enhancing player immersion." The comprehensive script revisions prioritize natural speech flow and improved dramatic delivery.
"We've adopted an audio-first philosophy for this remaster," Matsuno continued. "Nearly every line has been polished to sound natural when spoken aloud while preserving the original's spirit."
The writer humorously acknowledged potential stylistic shifts: "Some phrasing adjustments may simply reflect my aging perspective - hopefully they represent writing improvements rather than creative decline!"
The remaster offers two distinct versions: a Classic edition preserving the original experience and an Extended version with modern enhancements. This dual approach addresses fan curiosity about why Square Enix didn't pursue an HD-2D remake similar to recent Dragon Quest and Live A Live remasters.
In a follow-up interview, Director Kazutoyo Maehiro explained their rationale: "Our priority was introducing Tactics to contemporary audiences while respecting longtime fans. The Enhanced version modernizes accessibility while the Classic edition delivers nostalgic authenticity."
"Developing parallel versions essentially meant creating two distinct games," Maehiro elaborated. "The technical and financial challenges were substantial, but we viewed this as our tribute to the fanbase that's supported Tactics for nearly 30 years."
Art Director Hiroshi Minagawa revealed they experimented with various visual approaches: "When reviewing the original assets, we marveled at how much creative ingenuity overcame technical limitations. While applying modern HD-2D techniques, we maintained Tactics' signature aesthetic distinct from titles like OCTOPATH TRAVELER."
