Palworld developer Pocketpair made headlines last summer when it entered a partnership with Sony Music Entertainment, aimed at expanding the Palworld universe through merchandise, music, and other media. While the collaboration was purely strategic to grow the brand beyond gaming, some fans interpreted it as a hint toward a potential acquisition—an idea further fueled by earlier rumors that Pocketpair had been in discussions with Microsoft.
At the time, those acquisition speculations were officially debunked by Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe, yet they sparked widespread discussion within the gaming community. Since then, the topic has resurfaced multiple times, especially given Microsoft’s aggressive acquisition strategy across the industry, including several high-profile Japanese studios, and Sony’s own moves to strengthen its portfolio.
So, is an acquisition of Pocketpair likely? According to Communications Director and Publishing Manager John “Bucky” Buckley, speaking at this year’s Game Developers Conference, the chances are extremely slim.
“Our CEO would never allow it,” Buckley stated emphatically. “He’d never allow it. He likes doing his own thing and being his own boss. He doesn’t like people telling him what to do.”
That response left little room for ambiguity. Buckley went on to add:
“I would be shocked. Maybe when he's older, he might sell it off for money—and that would be sad—but in my lifetime, I probably won't see it. It'll be interesting to see where things go from here. We, as Pocketpair, are focused solely on the game itself. As for Palworld as an IP, while we’re involved, the broader direction is now largely guided by Aniplex and Sony Music. We mostly offer our input as they steer the course.”
Buckley and I also discussed the possibility of Palworld launching on the Nintendo Switch 2, the team’s thoughts on the game’s controversial nickname—“Pokémon with guns”—and more. You can read the full interview [ttpp].
