PS5 Rentals Boom in Japan Amid Supply Shortage
Jan 14,2026Author: Charlotte
Japan has recently witnessed a remarkable surge in PS5 console rentals. What's driving consumers to rent Sony's latest gaming system instead of purchasing it outright? Multiple factors come into play, including rising console prices, a blockbuster game franchise, and a strategically launched rental service by a major Japanese retailer.
Since February, GEO Corporation - Japan's nationwide chain with approximately 1,000 stores specializing in movie, music, and game rentals and sales - has introduced PS5 rental options starting at just 980 yen (about $7) per week or 1,780 yen ($12.50) for two weeks. The service has proven exceptionally successful, with 80-100% of available PS5 units rented out across all 400 participating locations.
In an interview with ITMedia, GEO's rental product manager Yusuke Sakai revealed that the PS5 rental concept emerged in summer 2024 as DVD and CD rentals continued declining due to streaming competition.

While PS5 supply issues had resolved by then, speculation swirled about potential Japanese price hikes due to unfavorable exchange rates. These concerns materialized on September 2, 2024 when Sony raised prices significantly - the Digital Edition jumped from 59,980 yen ($427) to 72,980 yen ($520), while the disc version increased from 66,980 yen ($477) to 79,980 yen ($569). The announcement sparked widespread consumer frustration, with many Japanese gamers criticizing Sony on social media for pricing the four-year-old console so high.
"This price increase led us to explore PS5 rentals using our existing infrastructure," explained Sakai. With decades of experience renting, selling, and repairing entertainment products since the 1980s, GEO possessed ready-made rental systems and technical staff capable of maintaining PS5 units. These advantages allowed GEO to undercut competitors' monthly PS5 rental fees (previously ranging from 4,500 to 8,900 yen) dramatically, removing barriers for curious gamers to test the system temporarily.
The February 28 launch of GEO's service perfectly aligned with Monster Hunter Wilds' release. While immensely popular in Japan, the newest Monster Hunter installment's limited platform availability created accessibility concerns. Given Xbox's weaker Japanese presence and the game's demanding PC requirements, PS5 emerged as the preferred platform - if not for its steep price point.
"Recognizing Monster Hunter Wilds as this year's biggest release, we prioritized launching our service accordingly," Sakai noted.
Sakai emphasized that GEO's PS5 rentals continue the company's longstanding mission of making premium entertainment affordable. He recalled how in the 1980s, GEO enabled consumers to rent ¥15,000-20,000 movies on videotape or laserdisc for just ¥1,000 nightly. Similarly, today's ¥80,000 PS5 presents significant financial hurdles for families and students - making rentals an appealing alternative.
However, prospective renters should note additional costs including game purchases/rentals and PlayStation Network subscriptions for online play. GEO currently offers only one-week and two-week packages, with extensions costing 500 yen per day.
