The video game movie genre has had its fair share of disappointments, with films like 1993's *Super Mario Bros.* and 1997's *Mortal Kombat: Annihilation* standing out as notorious examples of how badly a movie can miss the mark of its source material. These movies are legendary for all the wrong reasons. However, the tide seems to be turning, as Hollywood has shown signs of improvement with recent hits like the *Sonic the Hedgehog* series and *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, which have captured the essence of their video game origins more successfully. Yet, not all attempts have been successful, with movies like *Borderlands* serving as reminders that the genre still has its challenges.
Hollywood's persistence in adapting video games into movies is commendable. Given the low bar set by some past adaptations, it's hard to imagine sinking lower than the following abysmal video game movie adaptations.
