Overwatch 2's Season 15 Revitalizes Player Sentiment

Overwatch 2, once holding the dubious title of Steam's worst-reviewed game, is experiencing a resurgence of positive player feedback thanks to Season 15. This marks a significant turnaround, considering the overwhelmingly negative reception following its controversial launch and the subsequent cancellation of its highly anticipated PvE Hero mode.

While the overall Steam rating remains "mostly negative," recent reviews show a shift towards "mixed," with 43% of the 5,325 reviews from the past month being positive. This improvement is largely attributed to the substantial changes introduced in Season 15, including the addition of hero perks and the return of loot boxes. These changes have resonated with players, as evidenced by comments such as, "The recent update is what the game should always have been before corporate greed got in the way."

The success of the competitive hero shooter, Marvel Rivals ( boasting 40 million downloads since December), has undeniably impacted Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2. In an interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller acknowledged the intensified competition, stating that Blizzard is now adopting a more proactive, risk-taking strategy. He described the situation as "exciting" and even praised Marvel Rivals for its innovative take on established mechanics.

Despite this positive shift, it's premature to declare Overwatch 2's complete comeback. The game's Steam reviews still exhibit volatility, suggesting a challenging road ahead. However, Season 15 has boosted player numbers on Steam, with peak concurrent players nearly doubling to 60,000. It's important to note that these figures only represent the Steam player base; total player numbers across all platforms remain undisclosed. For comparison, Marvel Rivals recently recorded 305,816 peak concurrent players on Steam.
