Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th. This new entry features significant changes, most notably a redesigned parkour system and dual playable characters, each with unique gameplay styles.

A Refined Parkour Experience:

Ubisoft has significantly altered the parkour mechanics. Gone are the days of free-climbing any surface. Instead, Shadows introduces designated "parkour highways," carefully crafted climbing routes. While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable areas remain accessible, requiring a more strategic approach. The addition of seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives, enhances fluidity and visual appeal. A new prone position also introduces sprinting dives and slides, adding further dynamic movement options. The Associate Game Director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, explains that this change allows for more controlled level design, particularly differentiating the movement capabilities of the two protagonists.

Dual Protagonists: Stealth and Combat:

Shadows introduces Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but with limited climbing abilities. This dual protagonist system caters to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth and the more recent RPG-focused combat styles seen in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. The contrasting playstyles promise diverse gameplay experiences.

Release and Competition:

Launching on February 14th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other high-profile releases that month, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Whether it can capture the gaming spotlight remains to be seen. Ubisoft is expected to reveal more details in the lead-up to the launch.
