Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer

Despite the disappointing reception of the TV adaptation of Halo, Microsoft remains undeterred in its pursuit of bringing more of its video game franchises to the screen. Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming, shared with Variety that the company is poised to deliver more adaptations in the future, buoyed by the lessons learned from past projects.

This announcement comes ahead of the much-anticipated release of "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation of the popular sandbox game Minecraft, starring Jack Black. With high expectations for its success, this film could pave the way for sequels and further expand Microsoft's footprint in the entertainment industry.

Microsoft's journey into adaptations isn't new. The success of the Fallout series on Prime Video, which is already greenlit for a second season, underscores the potential of video game adaptations. However, the Halo series, despite its hefty budget, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception.

Spencer emphasized to Variety that Microsoft is committed to learning and growing from each project. "We're learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," he stated. He acknowledged the mixed results from previous efforts, including Halo and Fallout, but remains optimistic about future endeavors. "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously, we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, 'You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this,'" Spencer added.

Speculation abounds on which Xbox game could be next in line for an adaptation. Netflix had announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on Gears of War in 2022, although updates have been sparse. MCU star Dave Bautista has expressed interest in playing Marcus Fenix, adding to the anticipation.

Given the success of Fallout, there's speculation that Prime Video might be interested in an Elder Scrolls/Skyrim series, though Amazon's existing fantasy lineup might make this less likely. Sony's success with the Gran Turismo movie suggests that Microsoft could consider a Forza Horizon film.

With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has a wealth of IPs to choose from. A Call of Duty movie or a renewed attempt at a Warcraft adaptation could be on the horizon. Reporter Jason Schreier noted in his book "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment" that Activision Blizzard had previously developed series for Netflix based on Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo, which didn't materialize. Microsoft might revive these projects.

On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of Crash Bandicoot could lead to a family-friendly animated movie or series, capitalizing on the success of similar projects like Mario and Sonic. Fable, set for a reboot in 2026, might also see an adaptation.

There's even the possibility of Microsoft giving Halo another shot, this time as a big-budget movie.

Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further ahead in this arena. Sony has seen success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and even Twisted Metal is set for a second season. Sony has also announced adaptations for Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima, with a God of War TV show planned for two seasons.

Nintendo, meanwhile, boasts the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with a sequel and a live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation in development.
