"Indie Publisher Struggles as Oblivion Remaster Overshadows Release"

May 12,2025 Author: Jason

The unexpected release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on April 22 sent shockwaves through the gaming community, but it posed significant challenges for indie developers planning their launches on the same day. Jonas Antonsson, co-founder of indie publisher Raw Fury, voiced his concerns on social media, highlighting how "massive" shadow-drops from blockbuster games can overshadow smaller releases.

Antonsson expressed his personal enthusiasm for Oblivion, noting his excitement for its remastered version to reach a new generation of players. However, he pointed out the difficulties this poses for indie developers and publishers. "But from the perspective of indies and indie publishers, this is the problem with these sorts of massive shadow drops. Everything more or less gets buried," he explained. Indie teams, lacking the financial resources and marketing power of larger studios, meticulously plan their release dates to maximize visibility and impact.

On the same day, Raw Fury released Post Trauma, a puzzle horror game developed by Red Soul Games and inspired by PS2 era classics. Antonsson shared his sympathy for the team and the developer, who had invested years of dedication into the project. Raw Fury's tweet on April 22 sarcastically remarked, "Thank god Post Trauma was the only notable release of today and nothing else happened!"

From Bethesda and parent company Microsoft's perspective, the shadow-drop of Oblivion Remastered has been a resounding success. The game has seen a strong launch on Steam and has dominated online discussions, with players reveling in the return of iconic character faces, classic bugs, and beloved memes. Even other games heavily marketed by Microsoft, like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from Kepler Interactive, have felt the impact of Oblivion Remastered's release, as both games launched simultaneously on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Raw Fury could not have anticipated the shadow-drop of Oblivion Remastered when setting the release date for Post Trauma. Such timing might be chalked up to unfortunate coincidence.
