Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be a compelling action RPG, boasting a reported 20-30 hour playtime and adjustable difficulty. This article delves into recent development updates, revealing exciting gameplay features expected in 2025.
Phantom Blade Zero Development Updates: More Than Meets the Eye

Initially compared to Soulslike games due to its dark aesthetic and challenging combat, Phantom Blade Zero distinguishes itself with four distinct difficulty levels: Easy, Ordinary, Difficult, and Extremely Difficult. This directly counters the notoriously high difficulty often associated with Soulslike titles. Game Director Soulframe clarified on Twitter, following its Summer Game Fest 2024 showcase, that creating another Soulslike game was never the intention. Instead, the focus is on delivering "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."
While the game's multi-layered maps, diverse approach paths, and hidden areas draw inspiration from Soulslike games, Soulframe emphasizes that the similarities end there. He previously described the gameplay as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending intense hack-and-slash action with extensive exploration.
Gameplay Features: A Deep and Rewarding Experience

Recent interviews have unveiled further details. Players can choose from over 30 primary weapons and 20 secondary weapons, each offering unique combat styles and effects. The main story is estimated to take 20-30 hours to complete, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content available.
Boss fights are designed with at least two phases. A thoughtful design choice allows players to restart from the second phase if they fall in that stage, eliminating the need to repeat the first phase. A new game mode, "Li Wulin," lets players rematch previously defeated bosses, potentially unlocking hidden challenges and additional bosses.
An intriguing mechanic is hinted at, influencing the game's ending. The exact nature and number of alternate endings remain undisclosed, adding an element of mystery and replayability.
