- Hotseat Mode is an asynchronous multiplayer feature that lets players take turns on the same device.
- It offers standard, full co-op, and battle royale style gameplay options.
- The Halberds update significantly improves underpowered late-era military units.
Feral Interactive has released a substantial update for Total War: Medieval II on iOS and Android, introducing two long-awaited features. Called Hotseats & Halberds, this update adds the Hotseat multiplayer mode along with major balance adjustments for the late game.
Hotseat Mode in Total War: Medieval II enables multiple players to compete or collaborate in the same campaign by sharing one device. Although this feature was part of the Kingdoms expansion on PC, it now comes to mobile with additional functionality.
Hotseat Mode is available in both the Grand Campaign and the Kingdoms expansion, offering standard, full co-op, or a new battle royale option. The battle royale variant scores players in categories like military power and population, and includes an auto-elimination system to maintain excitement.
To improve the flow of multiplayer matches, the update also introduces optional gameplay adjustments for faster campaigns. Diplomats travel farther, structures are cheaper and faster to build, and key historical events such as the Mongol invasion now occur sooner.

On the combat side, the Halberds portion of the update provides a thorough rebalancing focused on weaker late-era troops. Pike formations have been redesigned with a Cohesion system, helping them maintain formation and resist enemies more effectively until their morale breaks.

Units such as Zweihanders and Daneaxe fighters now possess Cohesion Disruption, making them excellent for shattering enemy lines. Halberdiers also receive enhancements that position them as powerful alternatives to spearmen, with improved stats and better defense against cavalry. Finally, Gunpowder units gain advantages as well—musketeers and arquebusiers fire more rapidly due to AI and formation refinements.
