A major highlight from the Xbox Showcase was the announcement of Invincible VS, and we got exclusive insights from Skybound's Quarter Up developers at IGN Live about why this 3v3 fighter perfectly captures Robert Kirkman's superhero universe while drawing inspiration from Killer Instinct.
Invincible VS brings beloved characters from the comics and animated series into the arena, featuring Mark Grayson (Invincible), Omni-Man, Thula, Atom Eve, and Bulletproof. The decision to make it a 3v3 fighter stems directly from the franchise's emphasis on super teams, according to art director Dan Eder and combat designer Reepal Parbhoo.
The development team prioritized authenticity when translating these characters into fighter form. "We aimed to do justice to these iconic personalities," Eder explained regarding their visual approach. "We created a striking hybrid aesthetic that combines realistic lighting with comic-style outlines."
Combat mechanics blend accessibility with depth. Killer Instinct veterans will recognize the defensive counterplay philosophy, adjusted for team battles. As Parbhoo noted, "We've maintained KI's satisfying impact feedback while adapting the combo system for longer, more cinematic sequences."
The game introduces beginner-friendly mechanics like single-button combos alongside visceral "Overkill" finishers worthy of Invincible's brutal universe. Series creator Robert Kirkman remains closely involved to ensure authenticity while encouraging fresh interpretations.
Invincible VS launches in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
