Nintendo's newly announced Game-Key Cards for Switch 2 have certainly generated strong reactions across the gaming community. The company's recent Switch 2 reveal confirmed that while some Switch 2 game cards will store full games, others will simply contain download keys for digital versions. Nintendo later clarified that Switch 2 Edition titles include both the base game and upgrades directly on the cartridge.
How Game-Key Cards Work
These physical cards contain only a redemption code rather than actual game data. Purchasers will need to download the full game after inserting the card into their Switch 2. To prevent confusion, Nintendo clearly labels Game-Key Card packaging with visible notices on the lower front of each box.
Notable titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster use this system, while others including Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza contain complete games. The massive Cyberpunk 2077 (64GB) ships as a full cartridge.
The announcement has drawn criticism from industry figures including Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick, who stated: "Seeing Nintendo adopt this approach is disappointing. You'd expect a company with Nintendo's legacy to prioritize game preservation more seriously."
When questioned by IGN about Nintendo's physical media strategy during a store opening interview, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser reaffirmed their commitment: "Physical games remain crucial to our business. We value our retail partnerships and ensuring products remain available for consumers."
Publisher Benefits and Industry Impact
Bowser explained Game-Key Cards enable third-party publishers to deliver larger, more ambitious titles for Switch 2, stating: "Our goal is offering the broadest possible game library. This solution helps partners bring deeper, more immersive experiences to our platform."

Industry analysts note significant implications:
64GB represents the maximum cart capacity (used by Cyberpunk 2077)
Nintendo first-party titles maintain smaller file sizes
Potential eShop strain during launch periods
Storage Comparisons
Mario Kart World: 23.4 GB Donkey Kong Bananza: 10 GB Nintendo Classics: GameCube app: 3.5 GB Super Mario Party Jamboree Edition: 7.7 GB Kirby and the Forgotten Land Edition: 5.7 GB
Niko Partners' Daniel Ahmad highlights business factors driving this shift: "Game cards cost significantly more than discs, with prices increasing per GB. Digital distribution offers publishers higher margins and aligns with market trends where digital dominates sales."
Game Business editor Christopher Dring compares the cards to "holiday gift packaging," predicting: "With fewer retailers, rising costs, generational preferences, and sustainability concerns, physical media's direction seems clear."
