Nvidia Boosts Nintendo Switch 2 Graphics by 10x with Custom GPU

As teased by Nintendo, Nvidia has now shed some light on the custom GPU powering the Nintendo Switch 2, though the details didn't quite satisfy the hunger of tech enthusiasts. In a recent blog post, Nvidia confirmed reports from IGN and Nintendo that the new GPU supports AI upscaling through DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and ray tracing. DLSS is a cutting-edge AI technology that leverages machine learning to upscale lower-resolution images in real-time, improving both performance and visual quality in games.

Nvidia provided a glimpse into the Switch 2's GPU, describing it as a "custom Nvidia processor featuring an Nvidia GPU with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores for stunning visuals and AI-driven enhancements." They highlighted the extensive effort behind the Switch 2, mentioning "1,000 engineer-years" invested in everything from system and chip design to custom GPUs, APIs, and development tools. This results in significant upgrades for the console.

These upgrades enable up to 4K gaming in TV mode and up to 120 FPS at 1080p in handheld mode. The Switch 2 also supports HDR and AI upscaling, enhancing visual clarity and gameplay smoothness. The new RT Cores introduce real-time ray tracing, which enhances lighting, reflections, and shadows for more immersive game worlds. Meanwhile, Tensor Cores drive AI features like DLSS, boosting resolution while maintaining image quality.

Nvidia also noted that Tensor Cores facilitate AI-powered face tracking and background removal during video chats, enhancing social gaming and streaming experiences. During the Nintendo Direct, Nintendo introduced the C button, which supports new chat functionalities using an external camera and the Switch 2's built-in microphone. This technology smartly focuses on the player's voice, filtering out background noise.

Nvidia boldly claimed that the Switch 2 offers "10x the graphics performance of the original Nintendo Switch," promising smoother gameplay and sharper visuals. However, they didn't specify how this performance was measured, leaving it to experts like Digital Foundry to analyze once the Switch 2 launches in June.

Nvidia emphasized that Tensor Cores enhance AI-powered graphics while maintaining efficient power consumption, and RT Cores improve in-game realism with dynamic lighting and natural reflections. Additionally, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via Nvidia G-SYNC in handheld mode ensures ultra-smooth, tear-free gameplay.

During a hardware-focused roundtable Q&A in New York, attended by IGN, Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 uses DLSS, but remained vague on the specific version or any customizations for the console. Similarly, they confirmed the GPU's ray tracing capabilities without delving into specifics. Tetsuya Sasaki, General Manager at Nintendo’s Technology Development Division, stated that Nintendo prefers to focus on the value they provide to consumers rather than hardware specifics, leaving more detailed information to Nvidia.

Earlier this year, a patent filed in July 2023 was discovered, describing AI image upscaling technology aimed at reducing game download sizes to fit on physical cartridges while still offering up to 4K textures.
