Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Was Made Out of Boredom
Doing Something Different

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has swiftly earned its place as an instant classic, clinching the title of the highest-rated game of 2025 and astonishingly selling over 1 million copies within just three days. This game-of-the-year contender emerged not from a grand plan, but from the simple desire to break the monotony.
In an exclusive interview with BBC News on May 4, the developers at Sandfall Interactive shared the intriguing story of the game's inception. Director Guillaume Broche disclosed that the project was initially a personal endeavor to combat boredom. While working at Ubisoft during the peak of the 2020 pandemic, he felt restless and was struck by an idea for a new game.
Inspired by his childhood love for the Final Fantasy series, Broche set out to create a similar JRPG experience. His journey began on Reddit, seeking collaborators for his vision.
A Stroke of Luck

To bring his vision to life, Broche reached out across Reddit and online forums, aiming to assemble his team. At the time, the concept of Expedition 33—a game featuring Belle Époque-inspired, classic turn-based gameplay—was not immediately popular. Undeterred, Broche persisted in his search for like-minded individuals passionate about his project.
During lockdown in Australia, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen stumbled upon one of Broche's posts on Reddit seeking voice actors. Intrigued, she decided to audition, stating, "I was like: 'I've never done that, it sounds kinda cool', so I sent him an audition." Initially cast as a major character, Svedberg-Yen's role evolved, leading her to become Expedition 33's lead writer.

Broche eventually left Ubisoft to fully dedicate himself to Expedition 33, founding Sandfall Interactive. With funding from publisher Kepler Interactive, the core team grew to approximately 30 members. Many were recruited unconventionally, such as composer Lorien Testard, who was discovered through Soundcloud posts.
Backed by Kepler Interactive, the team was able to attract renowned actors like Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), enhancing the game's appeal.

Despite the expansion of the team, both Broche and Svedberg-Yen emphasized their versatility during development, often taking on multiple roles. Svedberg-Yen, for instance, also handled translations in various languages. Broche praised the team, saying, "We have, I think, an amazing team mostly of junior people but they are so incredibly invested in the project and talented."
The story of Expedition 33's creation is as enchanting as the game itself. Driven by boredom and a stroke of luck, Sandfall Interactive crafted a timeless masterpiece that promises to captivate gamers for years to come.
