Why That Brief Look at Mario Kart 9 Suggests Nintendo Switch 2 Is 'Significantly More Powerful' Than the Original — According to a Developer

An indie game developer with extensive experience creating games for the original Nintendo Switch has offered compelling evidence suggesting the Switch 2 boasts significantly enhanced processing power. This conclusion is drawn from a close analysis of the recently released Mario Kart 9 trailer.

Nintendo's official Switch 2 reveal, while exciting, remained notably vague regarding the console's technical capabilities. While upgrades like new Joy-Cons and a redesigned form factor are clear, the true power of the system remains undisclosed.

Jerrel Dulay of Sungrand Studios, a developer with a history of working on Wii U and 3DS titles, provides insightful commentary in a new YouTube video (via GamesRadar). Dulay highlights several key graphical features in the Mario Kart 9 footage as indicators of a substantial power increase.

Dulay points to the use of physically-based shaders, impacting reflections and lighting effects on the karts and environment. These shaders were computationally expensive on the original Switch, often impacting frame rates. The trailer also showcases detailed material reflections and high-resolution ground textures, demanding significant RAM resources.

Reports from late 2023 (Digital Foundry) suggest the Switch 2 utilizes an Nvidia T239 ARM mobile chip with approximately 1536 CUDA cores – a significant leap from the original Switch's Tegra X1 chip with only 256. This is further supported by leaked Switch 2 motherboard images. The rumored 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM (compared to the original Switch's 4GB) and potentially much higher memory transfer rates also contribute to the enhanced performance.

Dulay emphasizes the presence of volumetric lighting and long-range shadows in the trailer. Both are graphically intensive features that were challenging to implement smoothly on the original Switch. The combination of increased CUDA cores, RAM, and speed allows for these effects to be rendered efficiently, maintaining a smooth 60 frames per second. The high polygon count characters and realistic cloth physics on the flags further underscore the significant graphical leap.

Dulay's analysis provides a valuable perspective on the Switch 2's potential graphical capabilities, hinting at a significant performance upgrade over its predecessor. Further details are expected in Nintendo's April Direct presentation.
