Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are escalating. Following a DMCA takedown of Lance McDonald's Bloodborne 60fps mod after four years, Lilith Walther's Bloodborne PSX demake has now been targeted. A YouTube video showcasing the demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company reportedly hired by Sony. McDonald confirmed MarkScan's involvement, noting they also issued the takedown notice for his 60fps patch.
The timing coincides with recent advancements in PS4 emulation, enabling near-remaster quality gameplay at 60fps on PC, potentially prompting a more aggressive response from Sony. While Sony remains silent, McDonald speculates the DMCA actions aim to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster, preventing conflicts with fan projects in search results. This "copium theory," as he calls it, suggests trademarking considerations might be a factor.
Despite the increased activity, Sony hasn't officially announced any plans for Bloodborne. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered a personal theory, suggesting Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep attachment to the game prevents him from allowing others to work on a remaster or update, a sentiment the PlayStation team reportedly respects.
Despite Miyazaki's past statements deflecting questions about Bloodborne's future due to FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that the game would benefit from a release on modern hardware. The game remains dormant nearly a decade after its release, leaving fans hopeful, yet uncertain, about its future.
