Borderlands 4's loot and co-op enhancements were a major topic at PAX East 2025. Dive into the details about these system upgrades and discover the reasoning behind the absence of a mini-map in the game.
Borderlands 4 PAX East Panel

Gearbox Software unveiled significant enhancements to the loot and co-op systems in Borderlands 4 (BL4) during PAX East 2025 on May 10. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, alongside other team members, shared insights on the revamped co-op and loot mechanics.
Building on feedback from Borderlands 3 (BL3), Gearbox has refined the co-op experience in BL4. The new lobby system simplifies player connections, allowing seamless entry and exit at any point without needing to reach specific game milestones. Fast travel to friends' locations is now smoother, essential given BL4's expansive map. The level-scaling system, akin to BL3, enables players to join any lobby and sync with the existing world level, which also extends to their individual loot pools.

Regarding loot, BL4 adjusts the complexity to prevent overwhelming players with too many combinations. The number of legendary items will be reduced, but they will be more impactful and special. Not all loot will be randomized; specific drops from mini-bosses and major enemies will ensure rewarding encounters. Additionally, players can grind through Moxxi’s Big Encore, allowing mission and boss replay without the need to reload saves for farming.
Mini-Map Removal Explained

At PAX East 2025, fans queried the absence of a mini-map in BL4, given its vast world. Randy Pitchford explained that the team wants players to engage with the game's world directly rather than navigating via a map. He stated, "We made a big freaking world, and a lot of the things you do can be local space, but a lot of the things you do or want to do are out there, and a local space map is not a good way to navigate when you're thinking about objectives and opportunities - several at the same time that might be miles away - and a compass really helps us do that."
Pitchford emphasized the importance of playing the game rather than the map, introducing a new compass system to guide players through their adventures. He concluded, "Play the game first and understand the choices we've made, and I think you'll see and understand when you realize how big this world is and how playing the game in the world is better than playing the map."

As the release date approaches, Gearbox is confident in their progress. Following the Borderlands 4 State of Play and the announcement of an earlier release date, the studio plans to host more events like Fan Fest, Bilibili World, Gamescom, and others to showcase BL4's features.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled to launch on September 12, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned to our updates for the latest on Borderlands 4!
