Bloober Team's successful Silent Hill 2 Remake marks a turning point, and the studio is eager to demonstrate its growth with future projects. This article explores their upcoming game and their vision for the future.
Bloober Team's Path to Redemption
Building Confidence and Exceeding Expectations
The overwhelmingly positive reception to the Silent Hill 2 Remake from both players and critics has solidified Bloober Team's position. While the remake featured significant changes from the original, the final product exceeded expectations. However, the team acknowledges the initial skepticism and aims to prove their capabilities extend beyond this single achievement.
At the Xbox Partner Preview on October 16th, Bloober Team unveiled their next horror title, Cronos: The New Dawn. Game Designer Wojciech Piejko emphasized a departure from the Silent Hill 2 style, stating in a Gamespot interview, "We don't want to make a similar game." He revealed that development on Cronos began in 2021, shortly after The Medium's release.
Director Jacek Zieba described Cronos: The New Dawn as their "second punch" in a two-hit combo, with the Silent Hill 2 Remake being the "first." He highlighted the initial doubt surrounding their involvement in the Silent Hill project, given their lack of prior experience in the survival horror genre.
Zieba commented, "Nobody believed we could deliver, and we delivered. That was a big honor, working with Silent Hill and Konami." He acknowledged the studio's earlier plea for fan patience.
Ultimately, Bloober Team achieved an 86 Metacritic score. "They made the impossible possible," Piejko stated, "and it was a bumpy road because of the online negativity. The pressure was immense, but they delivered—an incredible moment for the company."
Evolution: Bloober Team 3.0
Piejko characterized Cronos: The New Dawn as a testament to creating compelling original IPs. The game features a time-traveling protagonist, "The Traveler," navigating the past and future to save individuals and alter a dystopian future ravaged by pandemic and mutants.
Bloober Team leverages the experience gained from the Silent Hill 2 Remake to evolve beyond their earlier titles, Layers of Fear and Observer, which had less robust gameplay. Zieba noted, "The foundation for Cronos, established in pre-production, benefited from the Silent Hill team's expertise."
The Silent Hill 2 Remake marks a significant evolution, representing "Bloober Team 3.0." Encouraged by the positive response to the Cronos reveal trailer and the success of the Silent Hill 2 Remake, Piejko believes the studio's reputation has been significantly enhanced.
Zieba aspires for Bloober Team to be recognized as a leading horror developer, stating, "We want to find our niche, and we think we found it. Now, let's evolve with it." He reflects on the studio's growth, acknowledging past shortcomings and their subsequent evolution.
Piejko adds, "We gathered a team that loves horror. Switching genres wouldn't be easy, and we don't want to."
