Why Bethesda Cut Gore and Dismemberment From Starfield

Feb 19,2025 Author: Ellie

Bethesda's Starfield initially included plans for visceral gore and dismemberment, but technical hurdles forced their removal. Former character artist Dennis Mejillones, who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that integrating these mechanics with the game's diverse spacesuits proved overly complex.

The intricate design of the suits, with their varied helmets and attachments, created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the resulting system as a "big rat's nest," highlighting the difficulty of managing realistic dismemberment effects while accounting for the suits' components and the character creator's evolved customization options.

While some fans expressed disappointment, particularly given Fallout 4's inclusion of such features, Mejillones argued that the stylistic tone of Fallout, with its "tongue in cheek" humor, made gore more fitting. He suggested that Starfield's setting didn't lend itself as well to this type of graphic detail.

Despite this omission, Starfield's September 2023 launch attracted over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review praised its expansive RPG elements and combat, acknowledging the game's challenges while highlighting its overall appeal.

Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer shed light on the game's extensive loading times, particularly noticeable in Neon. Bethesda has since addressed performance issues, including the addition of a 60fps performance mode, and released the "Shattered Space" expansion in September.
