PC Version of Monster Hunter Wilds Faces Severe Technical Issues

Capcom's latest release has been making waves by securing the 6th spot among Steam's most-played titles, yet it has drawn significant criticism from users due to its subpar technical performance. Digital Foundry's in-depth analysis of the PC version echoes these sentiments, revealing a host of issues that mar the gaming experience.

One of the most glaring problems is the lengthy shader pre-compilation process, which takes approximately 9 minutes on a high-end system equipped with a 9800X3D processor and over 30 minutes on a Ryzen 3600. Even when set to "High" graphics settings, the game struggles with poor texture quality. On a PC with an RTX 4060 at 1440p resolution and balanced DLSS settings, players experience significant frame time spikes. The situation doesn't improve much with the more robust RTX 4070, which, despite its 12 GB of memory, still renders textures that look disappointingly low-quality.

For those with GPUs boasting 8 GB of memory, Digital Foundry advises reducing texture quality to "Medium" to help alleviate stuttering and frame time spikes. However, this compromise does little to improve the overall visual quality. Quick camera movements exacerbate these issues, though they are somewhat less noticeable with slower camera adjustments. Even at lower texture settings, the persistent frame time problems remain a concern.

Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry points to data streaming as the core issue, overloading the GPU during decompression and severely impacting performance, particularly on budget graphics cards. He advises against purchasing the game if you have an 8 GB GPU and expresses reservations about its performance on even more powerful setups like the RTX 4070.

The game's performance is particularly dismal on Intel GPUs, such as the Arc 770, which can only manage 15–20 frames per second and suffers from missing textures and visual artifacts. While high-performance systems can partially mitigate these issues, achieving smooth gameplay remains elusive. At present, finding optimized settings that don't drastically reduce visual quality is nearly impossible.

In summary, while Capcom's new release is popular on Steam, its technical shortcomings, as confirmed by Digital Foundry, significantly detract from the overall gaming experience.
